Nothing like a healthy fear for one’s life to keep one from wriggling too much. I’m sure she’s afraid of the paddle too, and rightly so, though it could never do as much damage as toppling over that railing.

Quite true, quite true. The top of her hips should not be above the top rail. Although, he is striking low so she’s more likely to bolt upright than go head over heels. In any case, her thoughts should be on the threat to her behind, not the immutability of gravity.
I’ve warned many a young lady of the consequences if I saw their hips higher than the side rail. Sadly, even far out to sea, flogging is banned and all I could promise was their prompt deposit upon shore.
I’d still say it’s best not to argue with gravity. Surely her bravery counts for something?
As does the bravery of the young ladies out to sea with you-even without the flogging 😉
